Description

Olivia is a lovely dress with fine details in the back. Perfect to dance in as the dress offers maximum spin. You can choose to sew the back skirt part slightly longer, according to the pattern, or make the dress as long in the back as in the front.

In the back, the dress closes with buttons, and you choose how many you want to put. If you prefer to put press studs, that's just as well. You can choose between long sleeves, three-quarter or short sleeves.

The pattern also comes in a tunic version! Then there is buttoning along the entire back, but you could choose to e.g. just put buttons on the top half to leave the bottom open. The tunic gets additional nice details with the associated pockets, which you can choose to sew on the tunic or not.

Difficulty level: 2/3.
Sizes: Model A, the bag, contains 4 sizes. Model B & C, the bags, are only available in one size.

YOU NEED:

  • Outer fabric, medium to heavy weight woven fabric such as canvas, denim, twill, faux leather, leather, softshell, tapestry, teddy, faux fur, corduroy, oilskin fabric ("oilskin" in English, a water-repellent cotton fabric). You can often find these heavy-duty, woven fabrics in the home furnishing fabric department.
  • Lining fabric, woven fabric in light weight. Such as cotton fabric, poplin & lighter canvas. Preferably a thin but durable fabric.
  • If you want to use knitwear (e.g. jersey or college fabric) for the outer or lining, I think it can go well. But it is important in that case to iron on stabilizing spacers (e.g. H250 or G700) on all parts before starting to sew. The purpose is to remove the stretch.
  • Iron-on inlay, for more stability and/or padding. Tips and suggestions in the Sewing description.
    • For the bags (A) it is not necessary to have a spacer, it depends on how thin/thick fabrics you use and how you want the finished bag to look. With spacers on the outer fabric, and possibly also the lining, the bag gets more stability and stands up.
    • For the bag (B and C) I absolutely recommend spacers, even if it is possible to sew without them. But avoid the very strongest spacers if you sew model B (or A), considering the drawstring closure, it is good if the bag/bag is still soft and flexible.
  • Fabric for handle (model B/C): Use woven fabric in light, medium or heavy weight. Or buy ready-made bag straps (72 cm x 2).
  • Cord, for model A & B: The cords are used to create the drawstring closure.
  • Zipper, only for the bag (model B/C) if you are going to sew a pocket and/or divider with a zipper. See length below. It is fine to use zippers with plastic or metal teeth. It does not have to be divisible, but it is fine to use a divisible zipper. It doesn't matter if your zipper is longer than necessary; there are no strange things to shorten. It is also possible to use zippers as a metered item, read more on the blog about how to use them.

Above you can see the fabric consumption and length of zipper & cord for each model and size. All measurements are in cm and show how long fabric is needed (calculated on 140 cm wide fabric).

How much spacers are used? As much as the fabric, but sometimes you want to use different types of spacers for different parts. Remember that spacers often have less width than fabric.
